"Energize the Body, Transform the Mind" A personal brand photography case study
The Situation
Jenni was launching Fitness N Mind before Fitness N Mind had a website, because it didn't have one yet. She'd built her practice around a genuinely original idea: movement-enhanced psychotherapy, a clinically grounded approach that treats the body as part of the mental-health toolkit rather than separate from it, born out of her own years-long struggle to make peace with her body and a mid-struggle discovery of Dr. John Ratey's Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. As a therapist, fitness instructor, and athlete, she'd noticed that the discipline she brought to kickboxing, tennis, and yoga wasn't just changing her body; it was changing her mind. That became the whole premise of her practice.
But none of that had a face yet. There was no site, no logo, no photography, nothing a prospective client could land on to understand who Jenni was or what a session with her would feel like. And the brand had to hold two things at once that don't usually show up together: the credibility of a licensed psychologist and counselor, and the high-energy, radiant, spiritually grounded person her clients actually meet. The portraits and the logo weren't going to support a launch — they were the launch. Nothing went live until they existed.

______
Energize the body, transform the mind isn't a metaphor for Jenni; it's literally how she works.
______
The Strategic Decision
Before the camera came out, we built Jenni's brand persona from the ground up: personable, radiant, positive, spiritually connected, passionate, knowledgeable, dedicated, innovative as her top characteristics; appreciation, growth, respect, and optimism as her core values. Her dream client profile told us who needed to see themselves in these images: women (17–65), moms, college students, wellness professionals, athletes, and faith-forward women, most of them carrying some version of the same body-image battle she'd fought herself.
That gave us the brief for the whole engagement: nothing about this brand could look like a stock therapy practice, and nothing could look like a stock fitness brand either. It had to hold both at once, in the photography, in the video, and in the mark she'd put on everything from her website to her business cards.
The Brand Design
Jenni came into this already working with another designer on her logo, but the concepts weren't landing. I'd been giving Jenni feedback and direction throughout anyway, and eventually she asked me to just design it myself.
Working from the same mood board that shaped the whole shoot, I built the final mark around a flowing script wordmark (Midnight Signature) paired with a clean sans-serif line (Futura Lt BT) for the "Energize the Body ~ Transform the Mind" tagline, anchored by a five-point star bursting through a trail of sparkle marks.
That star is the same sparkler motif already built into the trail-hike photography concept; a deliberate throughline, not a coincidence, so the logo and the images were always speaking the same visual language instead of arriving from two different, disconnected places. The palette pairs grounded, warm tones (a deep burgundy, navy, and warm tan) with brighter, high-energy accents (gold, blush pink, green) — the same energize/transform duality that shaped everything else in her brand, right down to the six-swatch color story.
The Video
Two pieces came out of the shoot, and they do different jobs. The main brand video is Jenni walking a trail above Avila Beach, telling her own origin story on camera: the body-image struggle, the Spark discovery, the "aha" moment that exercise and cognitive restructuring belong in the same session, and an invitation to join the Fitness N Mind movement. It's the fullest distillation of her brand promise that exists; literally walking the talk.
The second piece, Walk the Talk, is a tighter two-minute video that opens with her new logo before moving into her on-camera. Jenni wants to turn this concept into an ongoing series. It's a smaller, punchier asset, but it's the only piece of video that shows the logo actually in motion and in context, not just as a static file.

The Outcome
"First, Gina is a master at making people feel comfortable so their authentic selves shine! After a comprehensive and fun interview, Gina created a beautiful mood board and brand story for Fitness N Mind, LLC. She is also an educator and wants her clients to understand how to use the photos and videos, whether it's on a website, YouTube, or social media. Her prices are reasonable, and her work is exceptional! I LOVE my photos and video stories."
— Jenni Swanson, EdD, LP, LPCC
This wasn't a brand refresh; it was ground zero. FitnessNMind.com didn't exist until this work was finished; the portraits and the logo were the prerequisite, not an accompaniment. That's a genuinely strong, honest outcome that doesn't need invented metrics: this engagement is the reason Fitness N Mind had a brand to launch with at all.
The Takeaway
Jenni's brand didn't need a persona invented for her; it needed permission to look like what she'd already built. The strategy work gave her the words (energize the body, transform the mind) and the settings (trail, patio, overlook) to say, visually, what she'd already spent years discovering the hard way. It's also why this project didn't stay in one lane: when the logo work happening elsewhere wasn't translating that same persona, the project simply expanded to include it, because a launch doesn't work if the photography says one thing and the mark next to it says another.
